A little bit about us

WHAT WE ARE

What is a Credit Union?

A credit union is a financial cooperative organized for the purpose of promoting savings and providing consumers with credit at favorable interest rates. All members of the credit union pool their assets, providing funds for loans to those in need within the group.

Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives, owned and controlled by their members. The members elect volunteer directors and supervisory personnel from among its membership to direct operations. The credit union is democratic in nature with members possessing equal rights to vote –one member, one vote –without regard to the amount of savings, deposits or volume of business.

Credit union services are directed to improve the economic and social well-being of all members rather than maximize profit. Any profits made by the credit union, after appropriate reserves and expenses, are returned to the members in the form of dividends, lower loan rates, more services, or other benefits.

WHO WE ARE

Who is Erie County Employees Credit Union?

In 1940, a group of County Government Employees interested in creating a place where they and fellow employees could save and borrow money safely, confidently and at fair rates of interest, formed the “Erie County Social Welfare Credit Union”. The credit union started with a Board of Directors and one employee, who on her lunch and breaks, would push a cart from floor to floor collecting peoples’ savings.

In 1943, the credit union name was changed to encompass all of Erie County’s Employees and to this day we’re known as the “Erie County Employees Credit Union”.

Our field of membership has expanded over the years. In 1992 the Erie County Title Search Companies were added. In 2004 the Members of the Erie County Bar Association were added. 2013 the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library Employees Federal Credit Union merged into the ECECU, allowing them to have many more services than they ever had before.

With 70+ years in service, the Erie County Employees Credit Union is here to serve the employees of Erie County Government, the Office of Court Administration of Erie County, Title Search Companies, the Erie County Bar Association members and their staff and the staff of the Erie County Public Libraries.

We are proud to announce that the NYS DFS has given us permission to expand our field of membership as of January 1st, 2017. See who can join here.
